Choosing a carpet fitterThings to keep in mind when choosing a carpet fitterTrust your instincts, does this carpet fitter look like someone you want to let into your home. How much floor preparation will the carpet fitter do before laying the new carpet. Will they for example brush the floorboards? Ask the carpet fitter about repairing floorboards, will they charge extra and how will they agree a price? Does the carpet fitter come with recommendations? If you haven't managed to get a recommendation from a friend can your carpet fitter provide references? if the carpet fitter can, make sure you follow them up. Does your carpet fitter sound knowledgeable about the carpets they are putting down, has the carpet fitter made suggestions about the suitability of fibre blends (i.e. wool content) and the proposed location of the new carpet. For example, high traffic areas such as hall ways and lounges benefit from higher wool content blends as they wear better. Underlay has a major impact on the durability and comfort of a new carpet, what suggestions has the carpet fitter made regarding the underlay for your new carpet? What state will your carpet fitter require the room to be in before they start? Ask what furniture needs to be moved and if the carpet fitter will help moving some of the larger furniture, and put it back again afterwards! New carpets can throw up a lot of dust to start with, will the carpet fitter vacuum the new carpet thoroughly after it is fitted? This list is not exhaustive but it does give you a good starting point by which to assess any potential carpet fitter. A good fitter will be proud to answer and help with any of the points above. |
